H.E. Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim Al Thani
Since his appointment as Minister of Economy and Commerce in 2013, his Excellency Sheikh Ahmed bin Jassim Al Thani has planned and overseen the implementation of economic policies aimed at promoting sustainable development at the national level in line with the National Development Strategy 2011-2016 and the Qatar National Vision 2030.
In addition to his ministerial duties, His Excellency assumes several key positions in the State of Qatar. He serves as the Chairman of Qatar Stock Exchange, Enterprise Qatar, and (MANATEQ) Economic Zones Company, General Supervision on the performance of Qatar Tourism Authority, as well as the Deputy Chairman of both Qatar Financial Center Authority and Qatar Investment Authority, in addition to several other leadership positions.
Prior to his appointment as Minister of Economy and Commerce, his Excellency acquired significant professional experience in his capacity as Director General of Al Jazeera Media Network from 2011 until June 2013.
During his tenure at Al Jazeera, he successfully engineered the expansion plans of the network and supervised the establishment of Al Jazeera America and Al Jazeera Balkans. Under his leadership, Al Jazeera network emerged as one of the world's leading news channel. The network won several prestigious international awards including the News Channel of the Year award by the Royal Television Society in Britain.
Prior to his role at AL Jazeera, His Excellency acquired significant experience since he started his career in 1995 as an engineer at Qatar Gas. He climbed the career ladder to assume various leading posts including the Head of Production Engineering, Director of Production and Reservoir, Director of Offshore Operations and then Chief Operating Officer – Engineering and Ventures.
During his tenure at Qatar Gas, he led over 247 onshore and offshore projects and integrated a comprehensive sustainability strategy into daily operations.
He also gained international industrial experience, working for over a year at Total in La Defense, Paris, France and at Mobil Research Centre, MEPTEC in Dallas, Texas, USA.
H.E. Sheikh Ahmed holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of United Arab Emirates, followed by a Master's degree in Integrated Reservoir Project Management from Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, London, UK.
