A trademark grants its owner the exclusive right to use it to identify and distinguish its goods or services from those of others. The owner of a trademark can also license its use to a third party in exchange for a fee.
The trademark is also an important tool to promote, advertise and market products or services. It is classified as an intangible asset whose value increases with growing consumer confidence in the brand.
- How to register a trademark?
A trademark can be registered by submitting an application along with a company extract to the Intellectual Property Department - Trademark Office at the Ministry of Economy. In the case of a foreign company, the extract should be certified.
A total fee of 1000 riyal should be paid upon submission of the application and another fee amounting to 325 riyal is collected after the application is accepted and the registration of trademark is announced in the official gazette.
If a four month period from the date of publication passes without receiving an objection, a trademark registration certificate is granted after paying a total of 2025 Qatari riyal.
The trademark certificate is valid for 10 years from the issuance date and can be renewed for another 10 years. The trademark certificate is valid within Qatar.
